Yabunaga (藪長, Yabunaga?) is the chef in the cafeteria at the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit station.
History[]
Yabunaga served in the military as a soldier in the Imperial Army. After his retirement, he works as a cook in the kitchen of the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit station in the city center of the Imperial Capital.
He is fastidious about his craft, and this pickiness is what keeps both the cafeteria and the kitchen in the station spick-and-span. The food that he serves in the canteen is known to be really good.
Unlike the catered lunches they serve at the Second Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit station in the old capital, he makes freshly made meals here, allowing the soldiers in the station to have a piping hot meal.[1]
Plot[]
During Kaoruko Jinnouchi and Miyo Saimori's tour of the station, they are unable to meet Yabunaga when they drop by the main kitchen and the cafeteria. Hearing about the delicious food that Yabunaga supposedly makes, Miyo starts feeling uneasy about the lunches she prepares for Kiyoka. She realizes that no matter how delicious she makes them, they would still be cold by the time Kiyoka gets to eat them, unlike the warm meals in the cafeteria.[1]
After her visit of Yoshito Godou at the military hospital in the military headquarters, Kaoruko wanders into the empty cafeteria, Staring at a cup of water, she starts feeling emotional after recalling Yoshito's words. Unbeknownst to her, Yabunaga notices her and approaches. Standing by her side, he looks down at her and calls her name. When she looks up, he silently offers her a white handkerchief, expressing concern that he can't have her crying there just before others come in for lunch. Although his words are vitriolic, his underlying kindness is evident, considering he’d left his kitchen during the busiest time of day to personally hand her a handkerchief. Kaoruko thanks him, and this only makes her cry more. She accepts the handkerchief and wipes her tears. Yabunaga grunts and gestures with his chin toward the cafeteria entrance, where Miyo is observing them. Miyo joins them at the table, and Yabunaga replaces Kaoruko's cup with two teacups filled with warm green tea.[2]
