History
Sumi was born in the Usuba estate to Yoshirou Usuba and his wife. She was born frail, but also possessed the rare Gift of telepathy, which excited the entire clan as it meant she would give birth to a child with Dream-Sight. As a result, Sumi lived under intense pressure. As a girl, she attended school in the imperial capital under the name "Sumi Tsuruki."[2]
At some point, Sumi met her cousin, Naoshi Usui, a troubled young man whose violent tendencies was feared even by the adults. She was the only one he opened his heart to, and under her influence, he became more docile. It was widely believed that they would eventually marry and lead the Usubas.[3]
When Sumi was a teenager, Tsuruki Trading's business waned due to the Emperor's machinations and the whole clan was facing starvation. The Emperor told the Saimori family about Dream-Sight and gave them a large sum of money, ordering them to pursue Sumi and pull her away from her family.[4] The Saimoris then approached the Usubas and offered marriage in exchange for financial support. Yoshirou didn't want to hand his daughter over to a clan that was already in decline, but Sumi overcame his objections and went to the Saimoris.[2] Usui tried to convince her to run away with him, but she refused.[5] The Saimori heir, Shinichi, already had Kanoko as his lover at the time and protested the match vehemently, but was eventually forced to break the relationship off and marry Sumi.[6]
A cherry tree was planted in the inner courtyard of the Saimori estate to celebrate the marriage. The then-head of the Saimoris took great pains to make sure Sumi wouldn't escape.[7] A short time later, Sumi gave birth to Miyo, who was born with Dream-Sight. However, knowing that the Saimoris would exploit Miyo for her powerful Gift, she sealed it away in the cherry tree and pretended her daughter was un-Gifted.[2] She begged Shinichi not to reject Miyo, but he coldly turned his back on them both, stating that Miyo would be loved if she was born into a commoner family, but to the Saimori house, she was only a disgrace. After he left, Sumi apologized to her daughter for being a good-for-nothing mother.[1]
Sumi passed away from illness when Miyo was two years old.[6] Her body was buried in the Saimori family grave.[8] The tree withered a year after her death, weakening the seal.[1] Miyo inherited her kimonos and other accessories, but they were soon thrown away or stolen by her now-stepmother Kanoko and half-sister Kaya.[6]
