Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit station (対異特務小隊の屯所, Tai i tokumu shōtai no tonsho?) is the military base for the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit in the Imperial Capital.

Description[]

The station of the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit is located in the city center of the imperial capital. Like other stations throughout the city, the military personnel from this unit do not work out of the main base of the Imperial Army, the military headquarters in the capital, that is located a bit far off from the city center.[1][2] The station for the Second Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit is located in the Old capital.[3]

The base is secured by a gated entrance, with a guard stationed at the main gate at all times. Vehicles entering the premises must provide proof of identification and state their purpose before being granted access.[1] Pedestrian visitors are also required to identify themselves and declare their reason for visiting.[4] The guards stationed at the gate do not possess Spirit-Sight, and the base intentionally lacks any protective barriers. This design choice is deliberate, turning the base into a concealed trap where Gift-users can discreetly deal with Grotesqueries without attracting public attention.[1] On the back side of the station, there is a small door on the fence that is not usually used.[5]

The base comprises of several key areas:

  • Main building: The main building on the plot serves as the headquarters of the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit.[1] This is where the unit conducts its administrative and strategic operations.
  • Training ground: This open area is used for outdoor exercises by uniformed soldiers.[1] It includes a row of targets for the soldiers to practice their marksmanship and combat skills.[6]
  • Parking space: This area is designated for the parking of cars belonging to unit members and visitors. Notably, Commander Kiyoka Kudou often parks his car at the workplace, even outside of working hours, as a convenient way to access the city. This is due to the limited availability of parking spaces in the capital, especially given that cars had only recently been introduced to the country.[1]
  • Water well: The water well is located outside, behind the station. There are watering cans and buckets next to the well, which were originally scattered around the vicinity of the well when Miyo first visits it.[7]

Main building[]

The building has Western architectural influence. Both its size and shape look like a schoolhouse, and it blends in very well with the capital’s cityscape.[1] The building consists of:

  • Reception or waiting room near the base entrance.[4]
  • Meeting room.[8]
  • Offices: These rooms serve various administrative function. One of them is occupied by the unit's commander. It's a spacious room that has a door with a more elaborate design than its counterparts, a large office desk in the back, and additional furniture like a table and a sofa. Currently, under Kiyoka Kudou, the place is a mess, with mountains of documents piled everywhere.[9]
  • Records room: This room houses reports and similar documents on incidents involving Grotesqueries. New ones arrive daily, and if they aren't taken care of, they would eventually turn into a huge mess.[7]
  • Courtyard.[3]
  • Main kitchen. A retired former military man works as the cook in the station kitchen, he is fastidious about his craft, and this pickiness is what keeps both the cafeteria and the kitchen spick-and-span.[3]
  • Cafeteria, which is on the small side, is neat and clean. Compared to the canteen in the old capital station, which serves catered lunches, the meals here are freshly made.[3]
  • Kitchenette. It is a dimly lit room. When Miyo first visits it, it had a cold dampness hanging in its stagnant air and was in a horrible state, with things scattered all over the place. It was so messy that there is just barely enough room on the ground to place your feet. There was dust and mold everywhere.[3] It is completely cleaned up by Miyo and Kaoruko.[7]
  • Locker room. It is in the same terrible state as the kitchenette.[3]
  • Storehouse: The storehouse is where the unit’s equipment is kept, which also includes cleaning supplies, such as a sponge and a dustcloth.[7] It was in the same terrible state as the kitchenette when Miyo first visits it.[3]
  • Dojo: The dojo is housed in a separate building from the station, which it connects to via a corridor. It is a spacious room where soldiers, clothed in martials arts wear, engage in rigorous training. This training includes practicing combat techniques with wooden swords and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Notably, bamboo blades are not used here, as the techniques taught are intended for real combat situations, unlike the sport of kendo.[3]

Except for the furnishings in the reception area and the commander's room, the rest of the station has a dreary décor.[8]

The military is predominantly male-dominated, and as a result, certain areas like the kitchenette often go neglected. While members are theoretically responsible for cleaning and doing laundry on a rotating basis, many of them lack experience in these tasks. Additionally, because this facility deals with confidential information, hiring external help is not feasible. Delegating these responsibilities to new recruits or trainees is also impractical, as the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit is consistently understaffed and prioritizes deploying new recruits in combat roles rather than assigning them to chores.[3]
