Genuine Emotions Deep Inside (本当の心の奥は, Hontou no Kokoro no Oku wa?) is the fourth chapter of Volume 4 of the My Happy Marriage novel.
Summary[]
Time passes. One night, Kiyoka invites Miyo to visit Godou. Miyo wants to go, but worries if her visit might cause problems. Kiyoka, seeing her worry, reassures her by suggesting that Usui is unlikely her father, given the timing of her birth. When Miyo divulges her anxieties about Usui attacking her if she went out, he emphasizes that Usui wouldn't risk damaging his organization's reputation in broad daylight, alleviating Miyo's fears of an attack from Naoshi when going outside, but his comment about Usui having other things to target bothers her.
The next day, Kiyoka drives them to the military hospital in the army headquarters. During the ride, they reminisce about their first car ride and how much Miyo had changed since their first meeting. When they arrive, Miyo notices the soldiers' whispers are either praise or fear for Kiyoka. They encounter Yoshito's doctor, who has a creepy vibe and is a relative of Fuyu, known for his outstanding Healing Gift. Inside Godou's room, they find Kazushi Tatsuishi teasing him. After exchanging greetings, Kazushi leaves. Godou laughs upon seeing the flowers Kiyoka brought, which upsets Kiyoka, leading him to step out of the room. Alone with Godou, Miyo learns that Kiyoka's behavior is driven by guilt over the recent attack, as it brought back memories of Godou's father's death. Godou's father had been the previous commander of the unit before Kiyoka and tried to recruit him during his student days, but Kiyoka always turned him down. However, Godou's father was killed during a mission and Godou initially blamed Kiyoka for not being there to save him. Godou believes that Kiyoka would be willing to share his past with Miyo if she asked. Kiyoka returns and they leave the hospital together.
Godou, feeling tired from all the visits, is surprised when Kaoruko comes to visit him. They talk about her work guarding Miyo, and then Godou asks if she's still in love with Kiyoka. Kaoruko is unsure how to respond, and Godou harshly warns her not to interfere with Kiyoka and Miyo's relationship, causing her to flee the room.
After leaving the hospital, Kiyoka and Miyo take a walk. Kiyoka is unusually quiet, so Miyo asks him if something is bothering him. Kiyoka wonders if Godou told her something and Miyo expresses her desire to know more about him. Kiyoka admits that he's more unsettled by Godou's incident than he thought, which is why he didn't want Miyo to see him so shaken. Miyo then asks about his relationship with Kaoruko, and Kiyoka assures her that there's nothing between them romantically, which relieves Miyo. Kiyoka tells her that if there's something she wants to know about him, he wants her to ask right away next time.
Kaoruko, feeling down after the hospital visit, returns to the station and sits alone in the cafeteria. Despising herself for her jealousy of Miyo and for having futile fantasies of gaining Kiyoka's attention, she starts to cry. Yabunaga, the chef, offers her a handkerchief. Miyo arrives and apologizes to Kaoruko. This angers Kaoruko and she yells at Miyo, confessing about her feelings for Kiyoka and her attempts to create a rift between them. Eventually, she apologizes and breaks down in tears. Miyo empathizes with Kaoruko, saying they both felt jealous and frustrated because each of them have something the other lacks. She extends her hand and asks Kaoruko to be friends again. Kaoruko hesitates, wrestling with a graver secret she's been hiding from Miyo, but ultimately, she takes Miyo's hand.
