Endings and New Beginnings (旅立つ人, Tabidatsu Hito?) is the fifth chapter of Volume 1 of the My Happy Marriage novel.

Summary[]

Miyo is now back at Kiyoka's house, recovering in her room. She dreams of her mother, who is standing next to the cherry tree. Her mother beckons her to come closer, but Miyo, hearing Kiyoka's mother, tells her that she will see her again and goes in the other direction.

Kiyoka has taken time off from work to take care of Miyo along with Yurie. He tells her about the aftermath of the fire. The Saimori estate had completely burned down, but fortunately no one was killed. Shinichi had dismissed half their servants and moved to a smaller residence in the countryside with Kanoko. Kaya had been sent to a strict family to work as a servant in hopes of improving her character. Minoru's crimes haven't been made public, but he has accepted responsibility and stepped down as the head of the household. His eldest son Kazushi will take his place. Kazushi has agreed to remain under Kiyoka's direct supervision, meaning that the Tatsuishi family is now a retainer house to the Kudous.

A few days later, Miyo and Kiyoka visit the burned ruins of the Saimori estate. Miyo goes to the stump of her mother's cherry tree. When she touches it, she feels a sharp pain in her head, but only for a split second. Miyo takes her mother's appearance in her dream as a sign for her to begin a new chapter in her life.

In the street outside of the estate, Kiyoka and Miyo run into Kouji. He asks to chat with Miyo alone, and the two go to a place where they used to play together as children. Kouji expresses his frustrations about not being powerful enough to save her and tells her that he is going to go to the old capital to train to become a better Gift-user. He asks Miyo if she remembered that he was about to tell her something on the day her family told her that she was going to wed Kiyoka, but Miyo recognizes that he didn't want to continue that conversation, so she lies and says she doesn't remember. The two friends return to Kiyoka and promise to see each other again one day.
