Choosing Defiance (決意の反抗, Ketsui no Hankou?) is the fourth chapter of Volume 1 of the My Happy Marriage novel.
Summary[]
Minoru catches a glimpse of Miyo one day and is enraged to see her healthy and happy, as it means that Kiyoka intends to keep her as his wife. Plotting to take her by any means necessary, he tells Kaya about what he saw. Kaya sends out her own familiar to see Miyo for herself and finds that Minoru was telling the truth, as Miyo was dressed in fine clothes and talking happily with Kiyoka. Overcome with jealousy and finding no sympathy from her father or Kouji, she decides to ask Minoru for help so that she can be Kiyoka's wife.
Earlier that day, Miyo and Yurie went to Kiyoka's workplace to drop off a lunchbox for him. On the way home, Miyo realizes that she didn't have Kiyoka's amulet, which hid her from familiars, on her. Immediately after, she is kidnapped and dragged into a car. Yurie hurries back to the station to tell Kiyoka what just happened. He sends out familiars to look for Miyo in the city, though he already has an inkling as to who kidnapped Miyo. Just then, Kouji shows up and asks him to help him save Miyo. Kouji had overheard Kaya and Minoru discussing their plan to kidnap Miyo and force her to call off the engagement. Kouji tried to confront his father with his Gift, but was easily overpowered and restrained. As he stewed in self-pity, he was freed by his older brother Kazushi and ran to the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit station to ask Kiyoka for help.
The two men then drive to the Saimori estate. Kiyoka easily destroys the gate with lightning. Shinichi and Minoru try to stop him, but are easily defeated. Kouji guesses that Miyo is being kept in the storehouse, but as they are about to go there, Minoru shoots a vortex of flames at them. Kiyoka blocks it, but the fire spreads to the entire house.
Miyo wakes up in the storehouse on the Saimori estate with her hands bound. Kaya and Kanoko physically assault and insult her, trying to get her to call off her engagement to Kiyoka, but Miyo steadfastly refuses, telling them that she is Kiyoka Kudou's fiancée. Kanoko strangles her, and just when Miyo thinks she's about to die, Kiyoka breaks into the storehouse. He carries her in his arms as he questions Kanoko and Kaya on what they did to her. Kaya boldly declares that she is only trying to correct a mistake and that she deserves to be Kiyoka's wife far more than her sister, on account of her looks and abilities. Kiyoka coldly tells her that he would never choose an egotistical woman like her as his wife and leaves with Miyo.
Kanoko and Kaya are left to deal with the burning estate. Kanoko screams that this is all Miyo's fault, and Kaya tries to reach for Kiyoka, but Kouji stops her. She tells him to run after Miyo and leave her, but Kouji bluntly tells her that if she died, Miyo will be sad, so he doesn't want her to feel any more pain. He takes her out of the burning estate.
