The First Date (初めてのデヱト, Hajimete no Deweto?) is the second chapter of Volume 1 of the My Happy Marriage novel.
Summary[]
Yurie gives Miyo a sewing kit that she previously requested. After soothing Miyo's doubts and concerns regarding Kiyoka and her own emotions, Yurie leaves Miyo to continue with her own chores, but not before stealthily watching Miyo mending her threadbare garments.
Over dinner on Miyo's tenth evening at Kiyoka's house, Kiyoka causally invites Miyo to go into the city with him on his next day off. Miyo initially protests, stating that she has no errands to run herself, but Kiyoka counters that she doesn't need a reason to go out and that he could use the company. With no reason left to refuse, she agrees and they part ways for the evening.
That night, Miyo has a dream about the Saimori estate. In her dream, she is gazing at her mother's cherry tree, originally planted in residence's inner courtyard when her parents were married. It's in full bloom and beside it stands her mother in a pale-pink kimono that has cherry blossoms just like the tree. Her mother tries to speak urgently to Miyo, but Miyo is unable to hear her. In the next moment, the petals are scattered by a gust of wind and Miyo sees her mother urgently pleading to Shinichi to not reject their daughter for being Giftless. After he walks away, Sumi apologizes to Miyo and asks for forgiveness for being a good-for-nothing mother. She starts to say something about what will occur in the future, but Miyo wakes up before she can hear what her mother says and is left pondering what it could be.
The morning of the outing, Miyo despondently readies herself, comparing herself with the dream version of her beautiful mother. She is interrupted by Yurie who offers to put makeup on Miyo and when they finish, Kiyoka appears and asks if Miyo is ready to go. She confirms that she is and they depart by car, stopping briefly at the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit station to park where they exchange words with Yoshito Godou, and then continue by foot into town.
They visit Suzushima's kimono store, where Kiyoka leaves Miyo in the main part of the store to converse with the owner, Keiko. He approves of various fabrics chosen by Keiko to be made into kimonos for Miyo, adding a cherry blossom fabric and a comb. They then stop for a dessert before returning back home, where Kiyoka gifts Miyo the comb.
Later at the Unit Headquarters, Kiyoka reads a report submitted by his informant regarding his investigation on the Saimori household. After reading the report and concluding his duties, Kiyoka heads home but not before destroying bird familiars that had been following him.
