Betrothal (婚約, Konyaku?) is the first chapter of the My Happy Marriage manga adaptation.
Summary[]
Miyo Saimori bows to her new husband, Kiyoka Kudou, and introduces herself. Kiyoka treats her coldly, but despite knowing his reputation of driving his prospective brides out of his home, Miyo knows that she has no choice but to stay with him.
Miyo is the oldest daughter of the Saimori family. Her parents married to strengthen their bloodlines. Eventually, her mother passed away from illness and her father Shinichi remarried his old lover, Kanoko. After her stepsister Kaya, who has powers, was born, Miyo's father stopped paying attention to her altogether. Miyo, who wasn't born with powers, was subsequently forced to work as a servant. She is abused by her stepmother and stepsister and ignored by her father. Despite being at an age where most girls would be getting married, Miyo knows that a life of servitude awaits her.
One morning, Kouji Tatsuishi, Miyo's childhood friend and the only person who cares about her, visits the Saimori house. Kouji gifts Miyo a box of sweets and explains that he is here because he has business with her father. Miyo notices that he is wearing a Western suit instead of his usual kimono and wonders if he's here for a proposal. Just then, a servant informs her that her father is calling for her.
Miyo goes to the room where her family and Kouji are gathered. Shinichi announces that they will be adopting Kouji into the family to carry on the family name, and that Kouji will marry Kaya. Miyo will be sent to the Kudou family to marry the family head, Kiyoka. Miyo despairs, knowing of Kiyoka's cruelty towards his potential brides and her lack of qualifications to be his bride. Miyo would be sent there immediately after packing.
As Miyo goes to her room, Kouji catches up to her and apologize for not being able to do anything for her. Miyo tells him that there's nothing to apologize for and that she doesn't hate him. Kouji is about to confess something to her when Kaya interrupts them. Miyo knows that Kouji is a coward and that it stems from his kindness, which has been a comfort to her. Miyo thanks Kouji for everything and goes to her room.
The next morning, Miyo sets off for Kiyoka's house, resigned to the fact that she has to stay there.
