Kaya Saimori (斎森 香耶, Saimori Kaya?) is the second daughter of the Saimori family, the daughter of Shinichi Saimori and Kanoko Saimori, the younger half-sister of Miyo Saimori and the fiancée of Kouji Tatsuishi. After the downfall of the Saimori family, Kaya is sent to an ordinary household and forced to work as a servant as punishment for her role in Miyo's kidnapping.
Appearance[]
Kaya is a beautiful young girl who strongly resembles her mother Kanoko. She has wavy waist-length long blonde hair with bangs tied back by a pink ribbon, and pink eyes.
Kimonos[]
Personality[]
Due to her pampered upbringing, Kaya is proud, spoiled, and vain. She is willing to go to extreme lengths to get what she wants, such as orchestrating Miyo's kidnapping in order to force her to give up her engagement with Kiyoka Kudou. She particularly delights in being cruel to Miyo, because she was raised to believe she is superior.
History[]
Kaya; child
Kaya was born to Shinichi and Kanoko when Miyo was roughly three years old. When Kaya was three, her father and her mother discovered that she had Spirit-Sight. She grew up spoiled and doted on by her parents.
Kaya orders Miyo to make her better green tea. Miyo leaves the room. Kaya and Kanoko talk poorly of her in front of Shinichi. Miyo arrives and sees Kouji, Kaya, Shinichi, and Kanoko in the room. Shinichi explains he’ll let Kouji marry into the Saimori family and take over. Kouji will be marrying Kaya, upsetting Miyo, while she is sent away to live with the Kudou family and she’ll marry Kiyoka Kudou instead.
Plot[]
When she sees Miyo out and about in her threadbare kimonos, she assumes it's because Kiyoka already tossed her out. She spends a solid minute admonishing Miyo and indirectly saying that she should just kill herself. Then Yurie shows up, and Kaya assumes that they must be co-workers only for Yurie to outright state that not only is she Miyo's servant, but Miyo will become Kiyoka's wife, much to Kaya's surprise.
One day, she sees Kiyoka and immediately falls in love with him. Minoru informs Kaya that Miyo is doing exceptionally well with Kiyoka and shows her a photo of the two together. Seeing the photo, Kaya realizes that the man she saw leaving the Saimori residence the other day was Kiyoka and begins to feel jealous.
When Minoru reveals that he had originally intended for Miyo to marry his eldest son, Kaya tries to have Shinichi sever Miyo's engagement but he instantly turns down her request, so she instead offers to Kouji a chance to marry Miyo like he wished.
Kouji discovers what Minoru and Kaya are plotting. Enraged that his father knew about Miyo's abuse but did nothing, Kouji attacks Minoru with his powers, refusing to listen to anything he has to say, stating he won't let him hurt Miyo but he is defeated and restrained.
Once Miyo is kidnapped, she finds herself in that dark warehouse where she was locked up as a child. Kaya, along with Kanoko, relentlessly torment Miyo, pressuring her to reject the marriage proposal herself but Miyo refuses, angering them to a point where they abuse her to force her to submit.
However, Miyo stands her ground and tells Kanoko and Kaya that she’ll become Kiyoka’s wife whether they like it or not, angering them as they hear someone attacking the house. After Minoru is defeated by Kiyoka, Kaya unsuccessfully tries to force Miyo to reject the marriage offer, Miyo think about her life with the Saimori family and Kiyoka. He and Kouji comes to Miyo’s aid as she falls unconscious from the abuse she received from Kaya and Kanoko.
They are shocked to see Kiyoka and Kanoko looks outside and notices the disastrous aftermath caused by Kiyoka’s battle with Minoru, breaking down at the loss of her home. When Kiyoka asks Kaya why she tortured Miyo, she denies any fault and claims Kiyoka should only marry a "perfect" girl like her rather than Miyo. Kiyoka angrily tells her to shut her mouth and dismisses her stating he would never be with a woman as arrogant and entitled as her even if the heavens themselves commanded so and tells her to get out of his sight.
This shuts Kaya up to the point that she doesn't even try to stop Kiyoka as he brings Miyo away from Kaya and Kanoko once and for all and to a new happier life.
Humiliated and no longer caring about living or not, she tells Kouji to leave her since he cares more about Miyo anyway. Kouji tells her to "shut up" as she is right about him caring about Miyo. However, he won't leave her to die, as Miyo will mourn her death despite all the hell Kaya put her through and states that everyone, including himself, did this to Miyo and he refuses to allow Kaya or anyone else to hurt Miyo ever again and forces her to run out.
After the kidnapping of Miyo, Kaya is sent to a strict household to work as domestic, as punishment for her role in the kidnapping and the years of exploitation and emotional and physical abuse that she inflicted on Miyo under the influence of her mother. Kouji tries to reassure Kaya that they can rebuild the Saimori family but she shrugs him off, wanting nothing more to do with him. She has not been heard from or seen again after this in the manga, although Kouji has reiterated that he is still engaged to her and hopes to prove her doubts in him wrong.
In the novels, Kaya sends a begrudging letter of congratulations to Miyo and Kiyoka at their wedding, stating that she has grown accustomed to servant work at this point. In the anime, she is seen scrubbing the floors at her new household in the OVA, smiling as she wipes sweat from her brow, an indication she is beginning to appreciate the value of hard work.
Abilities[]
Gifts[]
- Spirit-Sight: Kaya possesses this common ability that the majority of the Gifted are born with. It allows her to see the Grotesqueries, creatures invisible to normal humans. As a woman, however, she hadn’t been expected to battle Grotesqueries herself, so she never much cared about mastering paranormal crafts.[2]
Techniques[]
- Familiar technique: Kaya is also able to manipulate of familiars, a supernatural technique that anyone with the Spirit-Sight is capable of learning. It allows her to construct familiars from paper and conjure it for tracking down a target. Kaya uses this ability to locate her older half-sister, Miyo at Kiyoka‘s house and in the Imperial Capital.[2]
- Share-Sight: Kaya is able to use this ability to see through the eyes of the familiar she constructed to spy on Miyo.[2]
