Description[]
The imperial family is the highest-born family in the entire empire. Emperors possess the Gift of Divine Revelation, a type of supernatural ability passed down through the direct imperial line.
This Gift would give the user advanced warning from the gods about disasters that would befall the nation. Using their Gift, emperors throughout the ages would learn of threats to their country and either avoid them or take great pains to keep casualties at a minimum.
There is no way of knowing if these divine messages are indeed the work of the gods. What was certain, however, was the history of Gift-users obeying these Divine Revelations as part of their duties and using the information to combat the Grotesqueries.
The importance of the Gift of Divine Revelation is such that even if one is born as the eldest child in the imperial family, if they haven't inherited the Divine Revelation, they would never take the throne.[1] Possessing Divine Revelation is a necessary qualification for being emperor.
If the reigning emperor himself is in poor health, the member that has inherited the Divine Revelation will act in his stead to give directives to the Imperial Army and the Gifted families.[1]
Families with the Gift had long served the imperial family. Their powers are not only indispensable for combating the Grotesqueries, but also extremely valuable in battles against humans. They’d always played a significant role in suppressing riots and keeping peace within the empire.[2]
Loyalty of Gift-users to their country and emperor is generally very strong. If it wasn’t for the imperial family’s protection, it is very likely the Gift-users would be turned from heroes who protected the country into heretics. These apprehensions would only grow stronger in the current era, where advances in science had begun to make people question both Grotesqueries and Gift-users.[3]
Out of the Gifted families, the Usuba family’s Gift was in a category of its own and is far more unusual and far more dangerous in the way it worked. That’s why the imperial family has placed a strict code on the family.
This code has been kept firmly in place since the beginning, and the punishment for those who break it is extremely severe. To show complete obedience to the emperor, the Usubas obscure their existence to the public and avoid intermarriage with other Gifted families so that their Gift would remain confined to their bloodline.
Past emperors would even have them assassinated occasionally rather than risk their powers being used toward malicious ends.[2]
Gift-users submit to the emperor alone. Thus, even if they are tried and made to atone in accordance with the laws of society, they would be unable to justify their existence without an official pardon from the Crown.[1]
If a Gifted family is no longer able to fulfill their role as retainers to the imperial family, they would be stripped of privilege and their stipend and would have to rely on their amassed wealth to get by.[4] Losing a family that inherits the Gift is a huge blow to both the emperor and empire itself.[1]
History[]
Ever since the unnamed reigning Emperor was a crown prince, he is especially fearful of the Gift of Dream-Sight, a Usuba power that could even surpass the Gift of Divine Revelation that he himself possesses.[5]
After the kidnapping incident, the Emperor has heard the news about Minoru Tatsuishi that he's completely useless, and the Kudou family will get ahold of the Usuba bloodline. Arata Usuba will tell the Emperor about to put these back they belong. He feels that a ripple effect will begin soon, he the permission he seeks, and tells him to do not miss the opportunity. Arata agreed, as they began the operation as planned and the Emperor tells him to destroy "the accumulation of power no matter what".[6]
After he ascends the throne, he has two children. His eldest son hasn’t inherited the Divine Revelation, so it was nearly a given that his second son, Prince Takaihito is the very next in line to succeed the imperial throne.
The imperial prince and the empire’s preeminent Gift-user, Kiyoka Kudou has been in contact since an early age and they shared a particularly close bond. It went beyond formality and custom.[1]
Ever since the Emperor has fallen ill, his body had withered away like a dying tree. As abdication cannot be sanctioned, he will not be stepping down from the throne for the time being. Regarding Divine Revelation, the only choice is to have Takaihito serve in his stead.[5]
As Miyo’s Dream-Sight ability is at Usuba estate, the Emperor has scheme which means that the Dream-Sight is out of the way, that "all those who threaten us will finally be gone from this world forever." He also has a plan to assassinate Kiyoka so that Miyo will never interfere.[7]
Since Kiyoka Kudou have been hit by a Grotesquerie and being wounded,[8] and while his servants the sorcerers tried to get of Kiyoka, the Emperor has arrived at the secret cave from the palace, he tells the Emperor that Miyo is interfering, which makes him angry.
The sorcerer tells the Emperor not to overexert himself, but he said that the Kudous are now unprecedented threat to them, and to eliminate the power of Dream-Sight. He uses his power to get rid of these two, first said, "Be gone now! This is my will!" as to summon hordes of Grotesqueries, but they have been protected by a barrier.
Finally, he used the Grotesquerie form of the Emperor as the Emperor said in the demonic voice, "Upon my rule, you both must die!" But Miyo use the power with Kumihimo to defeat the Emperor and his servants and the Grotesqueries "Be gone!" The Grotesquerie form of the Emperor have been destroyed, as the flame killed the Emperor and his servants by Miyo.[9]
After the Emperor have been defeated and his reign of terror ended, Takaihito will become a new ruler.[10]
