Description[]
Gift-users are human, and while they could never become gods, they far surpass ordinary people in every respect.[2] They possess extraordinary physical abilities typically reserved for individuals with supernatural powers.[3]
Supernatural abilities generally enhance one’s body, granting resistance to injury and disease. Gift-users’ superior physical traits place them on an entirely different level than ordinary humans.[2] Because they are far hardier than most people, there is little risk of a Gift-user dying—even in situations such as large explosions—although they can still sustain severe injuries.[4]
The stronger the Gift, the greater its enhancement of physical abilities. This is particularly evident in those possessing the Usuba Gift, the strongest Gift known, whose bearers can overcome even significant disadvantages such as advanced age when facing younger, Gifted opponents.[5]
Role and Responsibilities[]
Combating Grotesqueries[]
Only the Gifted can perceive Grotesqueries, making them the sole individuals capable of hunting and destroying these entities through supernatural attacks, the Grotesqueries’ only weakness.[1] Because of this, families with Gifted members have long served as the Emperor’s retainers[6] and are mobilized for anti-Grotesquerie missions when required.[7]
Women in these families are generally not expected to fight Grotesqueries, so some, such as Kaya Saimori, never took much interest in mastering paranormal crafts.[8]
In addition to these noble families, a dedicated Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit exists within the Imperial Army. This elite force, composed entirely of Gifted individuals, specializes in handling supernatural incidents. All members possess Spirit-Sight and often other paranormal powers as well, and are almost exclusively of noble birth.[1]
Maintaining Peace[]
The powers of the Gifted are not only essential for combating Grotesqueries but also invaluable in conflicts between humans. As a result, Gift-users have historically played major roles in suppressing uprisings and maintaining peace throughout the empire.[6]
Social Standing[]
Due to their immense importance to the empire, the Gifted enjoy a high social status. Their service in protecting the land from Grotesqueries elevated their families to prominence generations ago, securing their place among the nobility.[1]
The loyalty of these families to the empire is traditionally very strong. Without the empire’s protection, Gift-users could easily have been branded as heretics rather than heroes. In the modern era, however, advances in science have led many to question the existence of both Grotesqueries and Gift-users, deepening these social tensions.[9]
Gifted Bloodlines[]
People born with the Gift are always descendants of established Gifted families. Within these bloodlines, whether one is born Gifted or Giftless determines their status and prospects in life.[10][6]
Many families place great importance on the inheritance of the Gift. This is exemplified by Shinichi Saimori’s rejection of his daughter Miyo when she was still a child—believing that, had she been born a commoner, she might have been loved, but to the Saimori family she was merely a disgrace.[6] Miyo’s mistreatment was not unique; such cases of familial abuse were common, though few are documented. Many Gifted families were harsh toward Giftless members, whom they viewed as failures.[6]
To preserve or strengthen their bloodlines, many noble houses arranged marriages exclusively between the Gifted.[1] Some, such as the Usuba family, refused intermarriage with other Gifted families in order to keep their unique Gift confined to their own lineage.[6]
Government Oversight[]
Because of their immense power, Gift-users are closely monitored by the government. If any were to become involved in criminal activity, the authorities would intervene immediately to prevent a major incident.[2]
The state maintains records of all known Gift-users, including those who have gone abroad, ensuring that none remain unaccounted for. Even under normal circumstances, every Gift-user is subject to at least minimal surveillance, allowing the government to trace their movements whenever necessary.[11]
Decline of the Gift[]
Many prominent Gifted families continue to reside in the Old Capital, where knowledge of supernatural arts and techniques has been better preserved than in the Imperial Capital.[1] Yet this legacy is steadily fading. The rise of modern science and Western cultural influence has caused many to dismiss the existence of the supernatural, leading to a sharp decline in both faith and practice.[12]
With the number of Grotesqueries dwindling, the need for active Gift-users diminished as well. As a result, demand for their abilities waned, and families without exceptional talents gradually lost their skill and refinement. Even Kiyoka Kudou, regarded as the most gifted of his generation, would not have matched the prowess of the masters of old.[10] Today, supernatural abilities are exceedingly rare,[1] and births of Gift-users have been steadily declining for decades.[9]
Artificial Gift-users[]
An artificial Gift-user (人造異能者?) is someone not born with the Gift, but who acquires Gift-like powers later in life through artificial means.
In experiments conducted on the outskirts of a farming village near the Kudou villa, the Gifted Communion used vials of fiend blood to bestow artificial Gifts upon ordinary humans.[11] Individuals who gain supernatural abilities in this way develop red eyes as a visible sign of their altered nature.[5]
