Our First Date (初めてのデヱト, Hajimete no Dēto?) is the third episode of the My Happy Marriage anime series.
Synopsis[]
While Kiyoka takes Miyo out to town, he quickly notices that she behaves very differently from other wealthy daughters he's encountered.[1]
Summary[]
Kiyoka Kudou invites Miyo Saimori to accompany him on a trip to the city centre on his day off. Although she’s hesitant to go, Kiyoka urges her to abandon her duties for the time being.
The day arrives. Yurie helps Miyo prepare for her first date with Kiyoka. Kiyoka and Miyo visit Kiyoka’s workplace first to park his car. His Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit’s aide, Yoshito Godou, encounters them at the parking space. He shoos Yoshito away for being annoying toward him and Miyo. Kiyoka then takes Miyo shopping. He reminds Miyo to act normal and not to think of herself as an inconvenience.
Minoru Tatsuishi speaks with Shinichi Saimori about his decision to give Miyo to the Kudou family since he asked him to let her marry his eldest son. Shinichi says he received an offer from the Kudou family and didn’t want to refuse them. Minoru argues Miyo’s mother is from the Usuba family and she could bear children who inherit supernatural abilities despite not having any herself. He reminds Shinichi that her family’s powers are exceptional. Allowing the Kudou family to become stronger would put their positions in danger. Shinichi says when Kiyoka realizes Miyo doesn’t have powers, he’ll likely want to get rid of her. He says Minoru can bring her into his family once that happens. Shinichi admits the Saimori family won’t get involved with Miyo anymore since they’ve abandoned her. He outright says he doesn’t care if she lives or dies. Minoru vows to bring Miyo into his family. At the same time, one of the Saimori family’s workers informs Kaya Saimori about her father's discussion about Miyo with Minoru. Kaya’s annoyed that he’s talking about Miyo as Kouji Tatsuishi asks her if he’d like to go shopping with her. Kaya complies, despite knowing Kouji still has feelings for Miyo.
Kiyoka and Miyo visit Suzushima's Kimono Shop and says his family’s been their most loyal customers. The owner, Keiko, pulls Kiyoka aside so he can discuss the fabric he ordered. She teases him for bringing a female with him since he rarely does. While that’s happening, he recalls Yurie telling him how Miyo mends her own clothes. He can’t escape the thought of Miyo wearing worn-out clothes despite airing from a prominent family. A new piece of fabric catches Kiyoka’s attention, so he asks Keiko to make a kimono for Miyo with that piece. She hands Kiyoka the things he ordered but pleads with him not to let Miyo go.
The two visit a sweet shop next, and Kiyoka asks Miyo if he can see her smile. He reminds Miyo they are supposed to get married if all goes well, so he reminds Miyo it’s okay for her to speak her mind. Miyo wonders what Kiyoka will think of her when he discovers she doesn’t have powers. Miyo hopes this happiness she’s feeling with Kiyoka can last longer until the time comes to tell him. They return home, and Kiyoka places the gift he got for Miyo in front of her room while she’s bathing. Miyo opens it and sees a comb inside. She rushes to ask Kiyoka if he put it there. In a flashback, Yurie says that presenting women with a comb is meant as a marriage proposal. However, Kiyoka says it doesn’t mean anything as he just wanted to get Miyo something. Miyo thanks Kiyoka for the gift and promises to treasure it.
At the station, an investigator presents Kiyoka with intel about the Saimori family, revealing their abusive treatment of Miyo and confirms she doesn't possess supernatural abilities. Kiyoka learns that the Saimoris arranged for Shinichi to get married to Miyo's mother, forcing him to break off his relationship with his lover, Kanoko. When Miyo's half-sister, Kaya Samori was revealed to possess Spirit Sight as well as lingering anger and resentment, the Saimori family had been abusing Miyo ever since. Kiyoka is appalled by the Saimori's cruel treatment of Miyo and realizes the deep scars left by her family.
Furthermore, the investigator reveals Miyo's birth mother is Sumi Usuba, a direct blood relative from the infamous Usuba family, shocking Kiyoka. The Usuba family is a mystery as they possess the supernatural ability of interfering with a person's mind and are impossible to locate. The investigator was unable to learn the circumstances of why Sumi was married into the Saimori family.
Kiyoka leaves the station. As he questions why he’s not acting like himself, he detects a group of familiars near him. Kiyoka uses fire to burn them all. He wonders who sent them to spy on him.

Adaptation Notes[]
- The scene with Iwashimizu is exclusive to the anime. Instead of hearing it from Iwashimizu himself, he only reads the report and never meets with the informant themselves.[2]
