Summer Cherry Blossoms, and the Mistake (夏の桜、そして過ち, Natsu no Sakura, Soshite Ayamachi?) is the tenth episode of the My Happy Marriage anime series.

Synopsis[]

Arata reveals his true identity and introduces Miyo to the grandfather she never knew. They claim they can cure her nightmares—on one condition.[1]

Summary[]

Kiyoka Kudou and Miyo Saimori arrive at Arata Usuba’s place. Arata welcomes them and informs them that this place is called the Usuba house. Arata reveals his real name Arata Usuba and that he is Miyo’s cousin. Kiyoka tells Arata he’s arrived because of Miyo’s nightmare issues. Arata believes Miyo’s supernatural abilities are causing her to have nightmares. Although Miyo got tested for her Gift long ago, Arata says all members of the Usuba family have a special ability.

Arata’s grandfather, Yoshirou Usuba, arrives and greets Kiyoka and Miyo. He informs Miyo that he’s Sumi Usuba’s father, her grandfather, and the Usuba family head. Kiyoka and Miyo follow them inside. Miyo realizes she’s feeling less disheveled. Arata explains it’s because of the Usuba family’s barrier around the house. Yoshirou tells Kiyoka Miyo’s nightmares will resume if she leaves the house. Yoshirou says he knows of a way to rid Miyo of her nightmares. However, he must turn Miyo over to them.

Yoshiro says he wasn’t aware of Miyo’s dormant supernatural prowess, which is why he or Arata didn’t go after her before. He explains Miyo has Dream-Sight, the power to intervene in people’s dreams. Yoshirou says if the Usuba family doesn’t control Miyo’s Dream Sight, then it could lead to many calamities. Kiyoka refuses to let Miyo stay with them and says he plans to protect her. Arata argues against it. He brings up what happened with the Saimori household and the Burial Grounds as evidence against her staying with him.

Arata asks Miyo what she wants and she doesn’t know. He proposes to Kiyoka to duel him for Miyo. If Kiyoka wins, Arata will teach him the method to control Miyo’s ability. Kiyoka accepts and the two men head outside for their duel. During their duel, Arata explains he doesn’t have Spirit-Sight like Miyo and reveals other members of the Usuba family don’t develop it either. He says the Usuba family’s line’s abilities are meant for fighting humans with supernatural prowess.

Despite dominating Arata during their fight, Arata utilizes his illusionary tactics to trick Kiyoka and disarm him. Arata wins the duel and Miyo tries rushing over to Kiyoka. However, Arata places a barrier around Kiyoka and transports him away from the Usuba family household. Meanwhile, Masashi Ookaito informs Yoshito Godou about their situation involving the Grotesqueries. He tells Yoshito they’re starting to move in groups and says they need to act accordingly. He asks Yoshito to contact Kiyoka.

Kiyoka returns home and Hazuki Kudou heals his wounds. She tells him to go back and retrieve Miyo from the Usubas. Despite losing the duel, Hazuki encourages Kiyoka to get her back and explains Miyo’s thought process to him. After contacting Yoshito, Kiyoka plans to head to the station to Hazuki’s disdain. Kiyoka says he has to set Miyo’s rescue aside for now because the situation can put many people’s lives in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, we see Arata question the Imperial Capital’s fate if the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit fails. He plans to concentrate on protecting Miyo to fulfill his duty. Arata visits Miyo in her room. He tells Miyo that Kiyoka’s fine and shows Miyo a picture of Sumi and Yoshirou. He informs Miyo that Sumi has telepathic abilities. Arata explains Dream-Sight principles to Miyo, stating that her abilities allow her to enter or manipulate anyone’s dreams, regardless of their strength.

He says as her powers improve, Miyo will have a chance to peer into the past, present, and future through her dreams. Miyo wonders why her powers didn’t awaken until now. Yoshirou enters the fray and tells Miyo it’s because Sumi sealed them away. Yoshirou promises to tell Miyo Sumi’s reasoning behind all her actions.

Adaptation Notes[]

  • Following the argument Kiyoka has with Miyo in the previous episode, he immediately drives to the Usuba's, while she is still unconscious from fainting and only wakes up after they arrive. In the original novel, more time passes. After she faints, Kiyoka first carries her to her room where sleeps through the entire night. After waking up, they eat breakfast together and after changing, he drives them to their destination. Unlike in the anime, Miyo is fully conscious during the trip, wrestling with self-blame amidst the dour atmosphere between her and Kiyoka.[2]
  • Kiyoka drives them directly to the Usuba estate, whereas in the novel he first visits the corporation building of Tsuruki Trading where Arata works. It is the address Kiyoka finds on the card Arata has slipped in Miyo's sleeve. Arata receives them there and walks the two over to the Usuba estate.[2]
  • During the duel with Arata, Kiyoka uses the saber he is always carrying with him as part of his military attire. In the novel, he didn't have the saber with him and instead pulled out a short sword he'd snuck on his person, surprising Arata.[2]
  • The duel is here portrayed as a close match, with Arata appearing to be on the brink of defeat before resorting to a last resort trick. However, this is not the case in the novel. When Kiyoka unleashes a vortex of flames at the group of Aratas, the anime depicts all the illusions vanishing simultaneously, leaving the real Arata injured and vulnerable to Kiyoka's fiery sword. In contrast, the novel describes a gradual disappearance of the illusions, allowing one of the Aratas to sneak up behind Kiyoka and Arata then cleverly transforms this illusion into Miyo. It is not a last-ditch effort but a part of his calculated plan, as he anticipated its effectiveness against Kiyoka. Never showing to be in much trouble during the entire duel, he even expresses a sense of inevitability about the outcome, believing that an Usuba would always prevail in a battle against another Gift-user.[2]
  • Yoshito contacts Kiyoka through the telephone, informing him about an emergency situation at work. In the novel, Yoshito does this by sending a paper familiar to Kiyoka's house.[2]
  • The scene of Takaihito looking up at the sky with an uneasy feeling, and the scene of the Emperor musing about his wishes coming true, are both exclusive to the anime.
  • The scene of Arata talking on the phone about the army's progress and a flashback to his childhood is exclusive to the anime.
  • At the end of the episode, Yoshirou and Arata explains to Miyo about her powers and her mother's past after Kiyoka is already sent away following his defeat in the duel. In the novel, this revelation takes place before the duel, with Kiyoka present to hear everything.[2]
