Dispelling (解術, Kai jutsu?) is the ability to undo or reverse a curse or technique.

Description[]

Dispelling is a supernatural ability that users with the Gift can use to dispel curses and magic with. It can work on living humans, but it doesn't necessarily work on the curse of the dead.[1]

Plot[]

Dispelling binding

Kazushi dispels the binding that is conjured around Kouji

Following a confrontation with his father, Kouji Tatsuishi is restrained, tied up, and imprisoned in his father's study at the Tatsuishi estate, through a magical binding that Minoru has conjured around him, so that he can't escape. His brother Kazushi Tatsuishi enters the study and is amused by Kouji's predicament. With surprising ease, he then proceeds to free him by undoing the binding through dispelling.[2]

After the Burial Grounds is unsealed, the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit discovers a man lying in the bushes. Kazushi checks the man's pulse and finds he is unconscious, similar to the other rescued men. These individuals are likely connected to the opening of the Burial Grounds and have had contact with the Grotesqueries released from the graves. However, none of them has regained consciousness. Masashi Ookaito asks Kazushi to attempt his dispelling ability on the man, even though Kazushi is unsure about its success. Hovering his hand above the man's chest, he attempts to remove the curse but is startled when Grotesqueries flies towards him in the spiritual world. He informs Masashi that the curse exceeds his abilities to handle.[1]

Some time later, Kiyoka Kudou is unconscious after being attacked by a Grotesquerie at the Burial Grounds. The unit calls upon Kazushi to use his dispelling ability to save Kiyoka. However, upon arriving at the Kiyoka's house, Kazushi states that there is nothing he can do to help Kiyoka. This declaration infuriates Kiyoka's aide, Yoshito Godou, to the point where he confronts Kazushi, resulting in a physical altercation. Yoshito chastises Kazushi for previously claiming to be skilled at disenchanting, but Kazushi calmly corrects him, stating that he is proficient in dispelling, not disenchanting, and reproaches Yoshito for not knowing this information.[3]

At a party hosted by Masashi, Yoshito inquires about Kazushi's attendance and then proceeds to badmouth him. He openly doubts Kazushi's assertion of being a dispelling specialist, finding it highly improbable.[4]

Trivia[]

  • In the original novel, the dispelling ability is only mentioned and never seen in action nor explained. Only in an exclusive anime scene, it is visually depicted and Kazushi briefly elaborates on it.[1]
