There is a tomb deep in the forbidden land. A burial ground for gift-users, referred to as the Grave. It is here that vengeful spirits of the supernaturally gifted transform into Grotesqueries. To prevent their escape, they are sealed away. As supernatural abilities are linked to spiritual power, if the Grotesqueries were ever awakened, it would mean an unprecedented crisis.
Burial Grounds (奥津城, Okutsuki?), also known as the Grave,[1] is a graveyard in the Forbidden Land and serves as a cemetery for Gift-users.[2]
Description[]
The Burial Grounds is the only graveyard located in the Forbidden Land. People with the Gift or Spirit-Sight generally possess a large amount of spiritual power. Thus, when they pass, their souls ultimately grow even stronger, which means a regular memorial service often isn't enough to put them to rest. The Burial Grounds is a place where their spirits are sealed away.[2]
Because many Gift-users perish in battle, they are resentful and holding hatred and anguish in their hearts. If their ghosts are awakened from their slumber and set free, then there’s plenty of reason to be concerned they might direct their hatred on the general populace. As specters possess no reason or intellect, if the released spirits make it out of the Forbidden Land, there is no telling what sort of damage they’d wreak. It wouldn’t be easy to return the escaped ghosts back to the Forbidden Land and seal them away once again.[2]
Plot[]
After the Emperor authorizes Arata Usuba for starting his actions, he then rings a bell left at his bedside and orders a chamberlain to drive the ghosts in the Burial Grounds to the countryside. Regardless of how many live or die.[2]
As Prince Takaihito received a Divine Revelation, he summons Kiyoka Kudou, Masashi Ookaito and Kazushi Tatsuishi to the Imperial Palace. Before heading there, Masashi informs Kiyoka about people having broken into the Forbidden Land outside the city and that the Burial Grounds are desecrated. Takaihito then tells the three that his Divine Revelation shows this incident will lead to an upcoming battle where lives will be lost if things go poorly.[2]
Some time later, Arata meets with Kiyoka as a negotiator for the Ministry of the Imperial Household and explains that someone lifted the seals on the Burial Grounds around two weeks ago in the middle of the night. Ever since, the Ministry of the Imperial Household has been rushing to identify the culprit and recover the souls that have been released. However, only seventy percent of the loosed spirits have been recovered, and they are still unsure who may have been the culprit.[3]
